"Holy War" in Ukraine
Russian Orthodox Church declares Russian aggression against Ukraine a "sacred war" to defend "Holy Russia."
The Church denies existence of Ukrainian people and their right to statehood.
It proclaims "Russian world" extends beyond Russia's borders, hinting at further aggression.
My Take: This dangerous rhetoric provides religious justification for Russia's actions, fueling fanaticism among supporters, and only serves to further escalate the conflict. Expect more religious symbolism in the Russian army.
Zelenskyy Shakes Up Inner Circle
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed his first aide, Serhii Shefir, and several other advisers on March 30th.
Shefir, a longtime friend and business partner of Zelenskyy, was responsible for communication between the President's Office and big business before the war.
The dismissals also included extrabudgetary commissioners for volunteer activities and ensuring the rights of defenders.
My Take: These changes in Zelenskyy's inner circle signal a shift in priorities and are hopefully motivated by a desire to streamline decision-making processes. The impact on the future of the conflict remains to be seen, but the move suggests Zelenskyy is adapting his leadership style to the demands of wartime.
Presidential Elections Postponed
Martial law in Ukraine forces postponement of March 31 presidential election.
President and Parliament to remain in power until new elections can be held.
Russian aggression and occupation make it impossible to ensure secure voting.
My Take: Ukraine's democracy must not be questioned and this might put it into question for some. Russia may use it to further destabilize Ukraine's government. However, it is sadly necessary with the war still ongoing.
